What Can Cause Power Surges in Your Gaithersburg, MD Home?

Home surge protectors have become an essential element of any modern home. They are needed to protect your home electronics from power surges, allowing your family to function in day-to-day life. Now, what causes home power surges?

Normal Usage

Perhaps the most common causes of home electrical surges stem from regular usage of household electrical appliances. Cycling electrical units such as washing machines and refrigerators can cause harmful voltage spikes.

Lightning strikes can do serious damage to your home electrical system, even if the lightning strike doesn’t occur particularly close to your home. Lightning does not need to directly strike your home for a power surge to cause severe damage to electrical units in your home such as your HVAC unit.

Power line surges are common when your utility service provider is experiencing service outages. As we all know, it is common to experience service outages during times of nasty weather when fallen trees or vehicle crashes can disrupt power lines.

There are also many internal issues that could cause power surges in your Gaithersburg, MD home. For example, faulty wiring, which is more common in older homes, can lead to power surges that can damage electrical appliances. Short circuits and tripping of circuit breakers can also lead to power surges damaging your Gaithersburg, MD home electrical appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Home Surge Protection Service

Can surge protectors be repaired?

Yes, home surge protectors can be repaired! Since they protect your home’s most important appliances, any repair needs to be done with care by a professional electrician. Electrical Connections LLC has professionally licensed technicians that can repair your home surge protector if you call today!

What do you do when a surge protector stops working?

When a surge protector stops working, it is best to contact an expertly trained technician like those from Electrical Connections LLC. We can conduct a repair while still protecting your home appliances if you call (240) 334-9580 To schedule a repair.

Do whole-house surge protectors need to be replaced?

Yes, whole-house surge protectors do occasionally need to be replaced. You should replace them every few years or when they stop working. If you think you may need a replacement, call Electrical Connections LLC today to schedule a time for a professionally certified electrician to inspect your whole-house surge protector.

What if I have more than one panel?

If you have more than one panel you may or may not need two surge protectors depending on how your panels are fed from the meter. You will need to have a professional electrician from Electrical Connections LLC to assess whether or not you will need an additional whole-home surge protector.

How big is a surge protector?

Surge protectors are not very large additions at all and provide a very important extra layer of security. The main panel surge protector is only about the size of two decks of cards.

What is cable surge protection and how does it work?

Cable surge protection works in the same way as a typical whole-home surge protector, but instead is installed inside your cable box which is typically on the outside of your house. Cable boxes and/or internet routers contain a lot of electricity that lightning is strongly drawn to. If you have a cable television or internet service, you should absolutely have a cable surge protector because if lightning hits your cable box, it will travel through any other device connected to it and destroy it. If you’re thinking about adding surge protection to your cable box, but aren’t sure whether or not to install it, have a Electrical Connections LLC electrical expert consult with you and provide you with more information.

Electrical Connection’s service was great. Josh, the technician who worked on our project, went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the results and offered solid alternatives along the way. He was detail‑oriented and did a great job covering the holes in the drywall. As with any job like this, we’ll still need to finish and paint, but he patched everything up really well. This was a major project that included replacing a breaker panel and a few other smaller improvements. I’d definitely call them again when the time comes.

Super easy to schedule and work with. We got recessed lights put into two rooms, and our electrician James was informative and helpful, being detailed and upfront throughout the job. He continued to be helpful through any questions we had. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommend Electrical Connections and Josh T specifically. We had an issue with our gas water heater, and EC / Josh were a huge help in the midst of a chaotic couple of days trying to make decisions on repair/replace, and gas vs heat pump water heaters. EC was easy to get in touch with, got me connected quickly and scheduled with Josh, who arrived on time, did a thorough inspection, and gave me a no pressure set of options to consider. He was incredibly responsive as we worked through final plumbing quotes and was able to adjust his schedule with the dispatcher to do the electrical work the same day so we could get our water heater replaced ASAP. Josh went above and beyond and was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. I can’t thank Josh and EC enough for helping make this experience less stressful for our family.

Franklin was wonderful. He was so thorough and clearly walked us through the work and the issues he uncovered (including some possible fire hazards that we are SO thankful he resolved). He was also just very friendly and nice to have around! Whenever we need an electrician again, we will be happy to have him back.

Kisan Jones is an excellent electrician. This is the second time I've interacted with him. He told me what he was going to do, he did what he said and explained it to me thoroughly before and after. Both times he was in teaching mode with an apprentice by his side. I hope it was a good experience for them because I learned a lot myself. Not only that, he saved me thousands of dollars as the "other" company was only trying to upsell me. He's respectful, personable and knows his business. The other staff was responsive, caring and alert to my concerns. I highly recommend this company.

Peter Aurgaur and Jeremiah Castillo did a great job today replacing/upgrading my breaker panel. They worked very well together to efficiently perform all aspects of the job. I look forward to getting a successful inspection and then closing outage work when Pepco arrives to work with Peter to up date my meter and housing.
