National Electrical Safety Month: Keep Your Home Protected

Published by Electrical Connections

National Electrical Safety Month banner

Every May, homeowners and organizations across the country recognize National Electrical Safety Month. Electrical Connections LLC proudly supports this annual initiative led by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). This campaign encourages communities to think about how electricity is used in their daily lives and what steps they can take to reduce risks.

Electrical systems work quietly in the background every day, but problems can develop over time. During Electrical Safety Month, we encourage all Maryland residents to check their homes for warning signs, update older equipment, and schedule professional inspections.

Why Electrical Safety Awareness Matters

Electrical issues can lead to fires, damaged electronics, expensive repairs, and even injuries. Many common problems start small and go unnoticed until they become more serious. Improving electrical safety awareness can help home and business owners:

  • Prevent electrical fires
  • Protect appliances and electronics
  • Reduce shock hazards
  • Save money on electricity bills
  • Identify outdated or unsafe electrical equipment
  • Improve the overall safety of their property

Even simple upgrades and inspections can make a major difference.

Schedule an Electrical Safety Inspection

One of the best ways to improve electrical safety is to schedule a professional electrical inspection. A qualified electrician can identify hidden problems before they become dangerous.

When you schedule an inspection with Electrical Connections LLC, our electricians will check:

  • Electrical panels and breakers
  • Connection points
  • Grounding and bonding systems
  • Wiring condition
  • Circuits
  • Outlets and switches
  • GFCI outlets in wet areas and AFCI protection where required
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Exterior outlets and service entrance wiring

Older homes especially need regular inspections because many were not designed for today’s electrical demands. When our technicians inspect your property, we look for things like overloaded circuits, outdated or damaged wiring, hazardous panels, and loose connections. A thorough inspection allows us to catch problems before they become dangerous.

Upgrade Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential for protecting your family and property. However, older detectors may stop working properly over time. If you own a home or business, it’s important to:

  • Test CO and smoke alarms regularly
  • Replace batteries as recommended
  • Replace outdated detectors
  • Consider interconnected alarms for better protection

Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of the home and near sleeping areas. CO alarms should be installed outside sleeping areas and on every level, especially where fuel-burning appliances or attached garages create risk.

Other Important Safety Devices

Other safety devices that offer protection include:

  • GFCI outlets or breakers for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, basements, and other wet locations to reduce shock risk
  • AFCI protection to help reduce electrical fire risk from wiring faults
  • Tamper-resistant receptacles in homes with children

Don’t Ignore Surge Protection

Home surge protection devices protect sensitive electronics from power surges. Surges can happen during storms, utility issues, or even from large appliances turning on and off inside your home.

Surge protection helps reduce the risk of costly damage by protecting electrical devices and appliances from sudden voltage spikes. As homes continue adding smart devices, home offices, and entertainment systems, surge protection becomes even more important.

Choose Certified Electrical Products

When buying items that use electricity or lithium-ion batteries, it’s important to choose products that meet recognized safety standards. Look for products certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). Certified products are tested for safety and performance, helping reduce the risk of overheating, fire, or electrical failure.

NRTL-certified products have:

  • Undergone independent testing to ensure they meet safety standards
  • Been tested to confirm they are free of known hazards
  • Been verified by an independent third-party testing lab

Chargers, batteries, and electrical accessories that are not certified may not meet proper safety standards and can create serious hazards.

EV Charging Safety Tips

Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, and safe charging equipment is important. Homeowners should:

  • Only use manufacturer-approved charging equipment
  • Avoid damaged charging cords or connectors
  • Hire a qualified electrician for EV charger installation
  • Ensure their electrical system can support the added power demand

Professional installation helps ensure safe wiring, proper circuit sizing, and reliable home charging performance.

Electrical Safety Starts With Prevention

This May, Electrical Safety Month is a reminder that small steps can help prevent major electrical problems. Inspections, surge protection, upgrades, maintenance, and careful buying practices all play an important role in protecting your property.

Electrical Connection’s service was great. Josh, the technician who worked on our project, went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the results and offered solid alternatives along the way. He was detail‑oriented and did a great job covering the holes in the drywall. As with any job like this, we’ll still need to finish and paint, but he patched everything up really well. This was a major project that included replacing a breaker panel and a few other smaller improvements. I’d definitely call them again when the time comes.

Super easy to schedule and work with. We got recessed lights put into two rooms, and our electrician James was informative and helpful, being detailed and upfront throughout the job. He continued to be helpful through any questions we had. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommend Electrical Connections and Josh T specifically. We had an issue with our gas water heater, and EC / Josh were a huge help in the midst of a chaotic couple of days trying to make decisions on repair/replace, and gas vs heat pump water heaters. EC was easy to get in touch with, got me connected quickly and scheduled with Josh, who arrived on time, did a thorough inspection, and gave me a no pressure set of options to consider. He was incredibly responsive as we worked through final plumbing quotes and was able to adjust his schedule with the dispatcher to do the electrical work the same day so we could get our water heater replaced ASAP. Josh went above and beyond and was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. I can’t thank Josh and EC enough for helping make this experience less stressful for our family.

Franklin was wonderful. He was so thorough and clearly walked us through the work and the issues he uncovered (including some possible fire hazards that we are SO thankful he resolved). He was also just very friendly and nice to have around! Whenever we need an electrician again, we will be happy to have him back.

Kisan Jones is an excellent electrician. This is the second time I've interacted with him. He told me what he was going to do, he did what he said and explained it to me thoroughly before and after. Both times he was in teaching mode with an apprentice by his side. I hope it was a good experience for them because I learned a lot myself. Not only that, he saved me thousands of dollars as the "other" company was only trying to upsell me. He's respectful, personable and knows his business. The other staff was responsive, caring and alert to my concerns. I highly recommend this company.

Peter Aurgaur and Jeremiah Castillo did a great job today replacing/upgrading my breaker panel. They worked very well together to efficiently perform all aspects of the job. I look forward to getting a successful inspection and then closing outage work when Pepco arrives to work with Peter to up date my meter and housing.
