Signs Your Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Published by Electrical Connections

What Is an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

An electrical panel upgrade is the process of improving your home’s main electrical panel so it can safely handle your current power needs. Sometimes, this involves complete panel replacement. The panel is the central hub that distributes electricity throughout your home. As you add appliances, electronics, and modern systems, it must be able to support the increased demand.

So, what is an electrical panel upgrade in simple terms? It can involve replacing the entire panel with a higher-capacity system or upgrading key components. This may include adding new circuits, updating breakers, or improving grounding and safety features without a full replacement. In other situations, an electrical heavy-up may be recommended, which increases the amount of power coming into your home.

If you’re asking, “Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?” the answer depends on your home’s age, electrical usage, and how well your current system performs. Older panels were not designed for modern energy demands, which can lead to frequent breaker trips, limited capacity, or safety concerns.

Understanding when to upgrade your electrical panel is important for protecting your home. Whether it’s a full replacement or a targeted upgrade, improving your panel can increase reliability, safety, and help your system keep up with everyday demand.

How To Know It’s Time To Upgrade Your Panel

Your electrical panel is the central hub of your power system. It receives electricity from the utility company and safely distributes it throughout your home. While panels are built to last, they can become outdated or unsafe as your electrical needs grow.

If you’re wondering, “Should I upgrade my electrical panel?” there are several clear warning signs to watch for.

Common Signs Your Panel Needs an Upgrade

Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips

Breakers are designed to trip when circuits are overloaded. If this happens often, your panel may not have enough capacity to handle your home’s electrical demand.

Lights That Flicker or Dim

Lights that flicker or fade when appliances start up may indicate your panel is struggling to distribute power evenly.

Odd Odors or Visible Scorch Marks

Waxy or burning smells, fishy odors, smoke, or dark marks near or on your panel are serious warning signs. You might also notice breaker switches or spots on nearby walls feel warm to the touch. These issues can all point to overheating or damaged wiring and should be addressed immediately.

You Have a Fuse Box

Older homes with fuse boxes are often not equipped for modern electrical use. Replacing a fuse box with a breaker panel is a common and important upgrade.

Not Enough Power

If you rely on extension cords or notice your system struggling when multiple devices run at once, your panel may not provide enough power for today’s appliances and technology.

Corrosion or Rust

Any noticeable rust or corrosion on the panel’s surface or within it can reduce performance and compromise safety. This indicates your system needs a professional inspection.

Buzzing or Crackling Noises

Unusual sounds coming from your panel can indicate loose connections or internal damage. This is not normal and should be inspected right away.

Outdated or Unsafe Panel Brands

Some older panels, including Federal Pacific Electric®, Pushmatic®, and Zinsco®, are known to have safety issues. These panels may fail to trip properly and increase the risk of electrical hazards, including fire.

When You May Want to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel for Efficiency

The choice to upgrade or replace your electric panel isn’t always driven by safety concerns. In many cases, homeowners choose to upgrade to improve performance, convenience, and capacity for modern living. Some examples include appliance installations and adding new circuits.

Installing New Appliances

Today’s homes use more electricity than ever before. Adding new appliances like refrigerators, ovens, HVAC systems, or EV chargers can quickly increase your home’s power demand. If your current panel cannot support these additions, you may experience breaker trips or reduced performance.

Before installing new appliances, it’s a good idea to have an electrician evaluate your system. By choosing a higher-amperage panel, like a 150 or 200-amp system, you can provide your home with the power necessary to operate all devices. Making this upgrade helps ensure you have sufficient capacity for safe and reliable performance.

Adding New Circuits or Breakers

If you’re planning to add new rooms, electrical outlets, or dedicated circuits, your panel must be able to handle the extra load. Adding circuit breakers without enough available capacity can overload your system.

An electrician can inspect your current system and determine if your panel has enough available amperage or if an upgrade is needed. Modern panels are designed to handle higher electrical loads and provide more flexibility for future upgrades.

What Are the Benefits of Upgrading Your Panel?

Upgrading your electrical panel can improve your home’s safety, performance, and overall reliability. Key benefits include:

  • Increased amperage to support more appliances and devices
  • Fewer breaker trips and more consistent power
  • Better support for modern technology and electronics
  • Improved energy efficiency and system performance
  • Added value and appeal for future home buyers
  • More capacity for future upgrades to your home’s electrical system

Electrical Connection’s service was great. Josh, the technician who worked on our project, went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the results and offered solid alternatives along the way. He was detail‑oriented and did a great job covering the holes in the drywall. As with any job like this, we’ll still need to finish and paint, but he patched everything up really well. This was a major project that included replacing a breaker panel and a few other smaller improvements. I’d definitely call them again when the time comes.

Super easy to schedule and work with. We got recessed lights put into two rooms, and our electrician James was informative and helpful, being detailed and upfront throughout the job. He continued to be helpful through any questions we had. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommend Electrical Connections and Josh T specifically. We had an issue with our gas water heater, and EC / Josh were a huge help in the midst of a chaotic couple of days trying to make decisions on repair/replace, and gas vs heat pump water heaters. EC was easy to get in touch with, got me connected quickly and scheduled with Josh, who arrived on time, did a thorough inspection, and gave me a no pressure set of options to consider. He was incredibly responsive as we worked through final plumbing quotes and was able to adjust his schedule with the dispatcher to do the electrical work the same day so we could get our water heater replaced ASAP. Josh went above and beyond and was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. I can’t thank Josh and EC enough for helping make this experience less stressful for our family.

Franklin was wonderful. He was so thorough and clearly walked us through the work and the issues he uncovered (including some possible fire hazards that we are SO thankful he resolved). He was also just very friendly and nice to have around! Whenever we need an electrician again, we will be happy to have him back.

Kisan Jones is an excellent electrician. This is the second time I've interacted with him. He told me what he was going to do, he did what he said and explained it to me thoroughly before and after. Both times he was in teaching mode with an apprentice by his side. I hope it was a good experience for them because I learned a lot myself. Not only that, he saved me thousands of dollars as the "other" company was only trying to upsell me. He's respectful, personable and knows his business. The other staff was responsive, caring and alert to my concerns. I highly recommend this company.

Peter Aurgaur and Jeremiah Castillo did a great job today replacing/upgrading my breaker panel. They worked very well together to efficiently perform all aspects of the job. I look forward to getting a successful inspection and then closing outage work when Pepco arrives to work with Peter to up date my meter and housing.
