Update Any Detached Garage With These 3 Tips

Garages, whether attached or detached, tend to get ignored until something terrible happens. The last thing any homeowner wants is to have a dangerous electrical issue in their garage, especially one that could cost thousands of dollars to remedy! This is why it’s essential to update the electrical system and make sure everything is secure, safe, and able to meet electrical needs. There are three great ways homeowners can update a detached garage. Read on to discover how.

New GFCI Outlets

GFCI outlets, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets, are widely used to prevent electrocutions. They act as a kind of failsafe in case electricity escapes the confines of the home or building’s electrical system. They’re actually required by law in new buildings, especially in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages. This is because a ground fault is more likely to occur in areas where water is present or could potentially be present.

New GFCI outlets not only give homeowners peace of mind that their garage is safe, but they also allow them to ensure their electrical system is working properly. Homeowners with a DIY mentality and a basic understanding of their electrical system can even install these outlets without professional help.

Check Wiring and Circuit Breakers

To properly update a detached garage, it’s key to check wiring and circuit breakers. This is especially important for those homeowners who are planning to add any new appliances, power tools, or other electrical devices to the garage. Those new toys received during the holidays have to live somewhere, and the detached garage is often the best place. But that means ensuring the system is up for it.

Homeowners can check the circuit breakers themselves if they feel comfortable, but it’s best to call an electrician to get it done quickly and safely. Professional electricians can make sure that the detached garage’s electrical system is ready for any new appliances. This will keep the risk of electrical problems down. Things like dimming lights, tripping breakers, frayed wires, and strange smells from the breaker box suggest that wiring is faulty or worn.

Electric Car Charger

Electric cars are no longer a thing of science fiction. Predictions say that by 2040, all the cars on the road will have electric capabilities. So, there’s no better time for homeowners to install electric car chargers in their homes. Some homeowners will find this easier than others, depending on their current electrical system and service.

For older garages, the service may need to be upgraded to handle the power the car charger will use. Other homeowners will find that installing an electric car charger is much easier. It often only requires installing a new circuit breaker instead of upgrading the entire panel. Keep in mind that there are some options when installing the car charger. Talking to a professional electrician can give homeowners options, even if they think they aren’t equipped to install an electric car charger in their detached garage inexpensively.

Electrical Connection’s service was great. Josh, the technician who worked on our project, went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the results and offered solid alternatives along the way. He was detail‑oriented and did a great job covering the holes in the drywall. As with any job like this, we’ll still need to finish and paint, but he patched everything up really well. This was a major project that included replacing a breaker panel and a few other smaller improvements. I’d definitely call them again when the time comes.

Super easy to schedule and work with. We got recessed lights put into two rooms, and our electrician James was informative and helpful, being detailed and upfront throughout the job. He continued to be helpful through any questions we had. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommend Electrical Connections and Josh T specifically. We had an issue with our gas water heater, and EC / Josh were a huge help in the midst of a chaotic couple of days trying to make decisions on repair/replace, and gas vs heat pump water heaters. EC was easy to get in touch with, got me connected quickly and scheduled with Josh, who arrived on time, did a thorough inspection, and gave me a no pressure set of options to consider. He was incredibly responsive as we worked through final plumbing quotes and was able to adjust his schedule with the dispatcher to do the electrical work the same day so we could get our water heater replaced ASAP. Josh went above and beyond and was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. I can’t thank Josh and EC enough for helping make this experience less stressful for our family.

Franklin was wonderful. He was so thorough and clearly walked us through the work and the issues he uncovered (including some possible fire hazards that we are SO thankful he resolved). He was also just very friendly and nice to have around! Whenever we need an electrician again, we will be happy to have him back.

Kisan Jones is an excellent electrician. This is the second time I've interacted with him. He told me what he was going to do, he did what he said and explained it to me thoroughly before and after. Both times he was in teaching mode with an apprentice by his side. I hope it was a good experience for them because I learned a lot myself. Not only that, he saved me thousands of dollars as the "other" company was only trying to upsell me. He's respectful, personable and knows his business. The other staff was responsive, caring and alert to my concerns. I highly recommend this company.

Peter Aurgaur and Jeremiah Castillo did a great job today replacing/upgrading my breaker panel. They worked very well together to efficiently perform all aspects of the job. I look forward to getting a successful inspection and then closing outage work when Pepco arrives to work with Peter to up date my meter and housing.
