Signs It’s Time To Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Published by Electrical Connections

How To Know It’s Time To Upgrade the Electrical Panel

At its core, a home’s electrical system functionality is pretty cut and dry. That said, the wiring of the electrical system is far from simple. It takes a licensed and experienced professional to install a whole-home wiring system properly, and all those wires receive their power from the same place, the electrical panel. The electrical panel receives electricity from the company’s main power lines and sends it throughout the home.

Electrical panels last a long time, but homeowners might start to notice a few telltale signs when it’s time to upgrade.

There are Signs of Faulty Wiring

Faulty wiring is far too common, and it can become dangerous for homeowners.

There are a few different reasons a home could experience faulty wiring, including:

  • Worker Error: The electrician who installed the wiring made a mistake or didn’t have the skill to install the wiring properly.
  • Age: As wiring gets older, it’s more likely to experience problems based solely on deterioration.
  • Power Overload: This is common for those who recently got a few new appliances in their home. There will be more information on this below.

Faulty wiring can become extremely dangerous rather quickly, so it is crucial to find an experienced professional when homeowners notice signs of faulty wiring.

Common signs:

  • The wall behind the electrical panel is hot
  • Burning smell
  • Smoke
  • A black mark on the wall
  • Inconsistencies in power

Installing New Appliances

In a world that gets progressively more electronic and appliance-friendly, the modern home continues to increase its number of appliances each year. This growing number causes electrical panels to become overloaded and cause problems.

For homeowners with new appliances installed, it’s important to contact a professional electrician for advice on what electrical panel would be best for the number of appliances they have in the home. Installation can also be dangerous to do without training.

Investing in a new electrical panel might not seem ideal initially, but it will be worth it. A home with an electrical panel that can’t support the family’s power needs is a home that is at risk for an electrical fire. That is why it is so important to contact a professional before deciding to invest in new appliances.

They Want To Add Circuit Breakers

When a homeowner wants to add circuit breakers to the electrical panel, this also poses a threat to overloading the breaker box. Adding circuit breakers to the home’s electrical panel requires additional electrical power to support the extra breaker.

Homeowners might think they have enough power to support an extra circuit breaker, but it is always better to be safe with electrical work than sorry. An electrician will inspect the home’s power supply before installation and tell whether they need to upgrade the electrical panel.

Most of the new electrical panels on the market today are more energy-efficient than in years past.

Electrical Connection’s service was great. Josh, the technician who worked on our project, went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the results and offered solid alternatives along the way. He was detail‑oriented and did a great job covering the holes in the drywall. As with any job like this, we’ll still need to finish and paint, but he patched everything up really well. This was a major project that included replacing a breaker panel and a few other smaller improvements. I’d definitely call them again when the time comes.

Super easy to schedule and work with. We got recessed lights put into two rooms, and our electrician James was informative and helpful, being detailed and upfront throughout the job. He continued to be helpful through any questions we had. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommend Electrical Connections and Josh T specifically. We had an issue with our gas water heater, and EC / Josh were a huge help in the midst of a chaotic couple of days trying to make decisions on repair/replace, and gas vs heat pump water heaters. EC was easy to get in touch with, got me connected quickly and scheduled with Josh, who arrived on time, did a thorough inspection, and gave me a no pressure set of options to consider. He was incredibly responsive as we worked through final plumbing quotes and was able to adjust his schedule with the dispatcher to do the electrical work the same day so we could get our water heater replaced ASAP. Josh went above and beyond and was professional and a pleasure to work with throughout the process. I can’t thank Josh and EC enough for helping make this experience less stressful for our family.

Franklin was wonderful. He was so thorough and clearly walked us through the work and the issues he uncovered (including some possible fire hazards that we are SO thankful he resolved). He was also just very friendly and nice to have around! Whenever we need an electrician again, we will be happy to have him back.

Kisan Jones is an excellent electrician. This is the second time I've interacted with him. He told me what he was going to do, he did what he said and explained it to me thoroughly before and after. Both times he was in teaching mode with an apprentice by his side. I hope it was a good experience for them because I learned a lot myself. Not only that, he saved me thousands of dollars as the "other" company was only trying to upsell me. He's respectful, personable and knows his business. The other staff was responsive, caring and alert to my concerns. I highly recommend this company.

Peter Aurgaur and Jeremiah Castillo did a great job today replacing/upgrading my breaker panel. They worked very well together to efficiently perform all aspects of the job. I look forward to getting a successful inspection and then closing outage work when Pepco arrives to work with Peter to up date my meter and housing.
